Clear Perspective EyeCare
Did you know diabetes affects blood vessels throughout your body? The eye contains some of the smallest and most sensitive vessels. "There's a lot of ways to detect diabetes, but often times people are diagnosed with diabetes for the first time with an eye exam," says Clear Perspective EyeCare's Dr. Drew Casey.
The blood vessels in your eyes are the only blood vessels in the body that can be seen without breaking your skin, which is why diabetes can be monitored with eye exams. "When we dialte your eyes, we take a look at the back of your eye and we can look at blood vessels," Doctor Casey says.
If it's not treated, diabetes can cause irreversible vision loss. "When you do have bleeding in the back of the eye, it can affect the vision, it can actually cause retinal detatchment. There's a lot of eye conditions that can happen from diabetes. So it's really important to have that diagnosed and treated right away," Doctor Casey says. If there is bleeding seen, your primary care provider may need to adjust the medication used to treat diabetes.
